About our Resident Company Programs

Generator provides office space, equipment, and mentorship to independent performance collectives, individuals, and incorporated companies over a period of growth or change. Being in residence at Generator means 24-hour access to office and meeting space - including wifi, photocopier and printing - mentorship, and the ability to audit classes in the Artist Producer Training Program.

Our residencies promote capacity building, peer mentorship and knowledge-sharing among companies and with other artists the organization supports.

Resident Companies give back to the community at Generator by:

• Teaching 1-2 classes/year as part of the Artist Producer Training Program

• Contributing approximately 5 hours/year to resource generation for ArtistProducerResource.com

• Attending Generator events and social gatherings

Resident Company GROWTH

This is a free program offered to an emerging company/collective (or an individual operating as a company/collective) looking to level up their work over the course of two years. No fee to participate. Accepting one new company who will be in residence from September 2019-August 2021. We are particularly interested in applicants who work from a social justice/equity framework. Please include a little about yourself and the company, as well as your plans for the next two years.

NEW - Resident Company PRODUCTION

This will be a new way of supporting indie companies who have some production history and record of success, and who have a production slated at or with an established theatre company. This residency operates as a triad between the indie production company, the established company, and Generator. Residencies will last between 8-14 months and are planned around the production company’s presentation at/with the established organization. This residency comes with intensive coaching from the Generator team leading up to the production. The monthly cost of this program is $720. Company Collaborator

This residency is for companies who want to deepen an existing practice and have some organizational infrastructure already in place. They provide learning support and collaboration to less seasoned artists in the office. The monthly cost of this program is $300. We are currently not seeking any companies with this model, but be in touch so we can let you know when spots open up.

About the Artist Producer Training Program

If you are an independent producer, self-producing artist, production manager, designer, or an artist who wants to learn how to make art happen more efficiently, Generator’s one-year paid Artist Producer Training program is for you. This is our flagship program and it has transformed the careers of four cohorts of Artist Producers. We are particularly interested in applicants whose practices work from a social justice/equity framework and who are currently working on self-produced projects.

Participants will learn effective producing strategies over the course of three semesters of coursework led by experienced independent artists and companies, followed by one practicum project with a mentor company.

Graduates will create and implement projects and budgets that have the goal of paying a better wage to artists, gain skills to sustain a career in the arts, and improve the overall health of the performing arts ecology.

2019/20 Dates

This is an intimate program with only six-eight participants (number will be funding dependent). Classes run for three six-week sessions between November-May on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30-9:30pm. Work on assignments happens outside of class time. Practicum schedules vary but run between May-August 2020 (outside of class time).

Attendance in class is mandatory. 2019/20 session dates are as follows:

APT Welcome Potluck: October 29, 2019
Stage 1: November 5 - December 12, 2019
Stage 2: February 4 - March 12, 2020
Stage 3: April 7 - May 7, 2020

The total fee paid to each participant for completing the Artist Producer Training Program is $1,400.

Generator Access Information

The Generator office is at Suite 501, 720 Bathurst (where the interviews will be taking place). It is in a wheelchair accessible building.

Fully wheelchair accessible washrooms are available on the second and third floors. Large stall washrooms are on every floor. There is a rather clunky, but functioning elevator and there are buttons to open the main doors on each floor. Gender-neutral washrooms are available on all floors.

Unfortunately, we are not able to provide ASL interpretation for APT at this time. Please email us at info@generatorto.com and let us know if this is something you require - we will use your testimonial to advocate for funding to support D/deaf artists.

We recognize that we all have access needs - visible, invisible and some that are provided for us without needing to think or vocalize them. Our philosophy is one size fits one, so if you require assistance, please let us know and we will do our best to support you.

Open House

We will be hosting an open house on Monday, April 29, 2019 from 6-8pm at the Generator office at 720 Bathurst Street, Suite 501. Please join us to ask questions and see our space.

How to Apply

Submissions will be accepted via this Google form until May 15, 2019 at 5:00pm ET. Here’s what the form will ask you:

Please provide a link to a MAXIMUM 3-minute video in which you discuss your producing practice. Please include the following (there are no correct answers to these questions - we just want to get to know you better):

1. How do you define yourself as an artist and where are you at in your career?

2. Why do you want to take on a producing role?

3. What is your social justice/equity framework and how does it apply to the work you do?

4. Do you currently self-identify as a producer or artist-producer?

Tell us about your philosophy and values as a producer or artist-producer, who your audience is, and what motivates your practice (750 words/1700 max character count)

Dates & Conflicts (we’ll ask you to acknowledge that there is a maximum total of three absences permitted in order to participate in the program. If you have conflicts, you’ll be asked to list them and to discuss in further detail if you are called in for an interview.

About Transform Dance

Supported by the Toronto Arts Council’s Open Door program, Generator is embarking on a transformative justice and mediation project in the dance sector in Toronto. We will lead three groups of artists who have experienced sexual and/or workplace harassment through three distinct, one-size-fits-one processes designed to heal relationships, change the culture, and increase community accountability. This process - Transform Dance - will include a Project Coordinator and Advisory Group (consisting of experienced facilitators and mediators, Indigenous elders, Human Resources specialists, lawyers, and other project advisors).

About the Position

Generator is hiring a Project Coordinator for Transform Dance. The Project Coordinator will engage with the Advisory group and the individuals who will potentially become case studies, and will also write a final report on the process with recommendations to the wider arts community. Due to the sensitive nature of these conversations, the Project Coordinator will require the skills to both support individuals and to make recommendations for support outside of the project, such as resources on healing, counselling and self-care strategies.  

Qualifications

• Proven skills in psychosocial assessment, crisis intervention, referrals and case management

• Degree in Social Work/Counseling/Therapy discipline from a recognized university, or equivalent combination of education and experience working with cases of harassment and/or violence against women

• Proficiency in current assessment, counseling/therapy and psychosocial counseling techniques for working with individuals, groups and communities

• Excellent communication skills, both oral and written

• Knowledge of the dance community considered an asset

Responsibilities

• Plan and facilitate Advisory Group meetings

• Source and select three case studies in coordination with the Advisory Group

• Coordinate all elements of the implementation of the case studies

• Write final report, including recommendations on the process

Hours of Work & Compensation

This position will start in April and run until December 2019 at the latest. The total compensation for the project will be $20,000. This is a part-time contract position. The hours, fee payments, and scheduling of the position will be negotiated with the successful candidate and will consider the candidate’s other commitments as well as the timing of the case studies.
