Playwright, emerging researcher and queer nightlife fanboi Mateusz West interviews multihyphenate artists from Vancouver’s DIY performance scene, asking what arts institutions can learn from queer subculture organizing.
This mini-episode is a proof of concept for Mateusz’s larger research project, investigating how the vibrant 2SLGBTQ+ counterculture scene on unceded Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh territories (i.e. drag, nightlife, burlesque, kink and performance art) fosters belonging and experimentation, and how these spaces can inspire change in the theatre sector.
